Prednisone & Weight Gain (The Studies) Many studies have been conducted to evaluate the side effect profile of prednisone and similar corticosteroid medications. The most comprehensive investigation into the issue to date, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1997, investigated the efficacy of three prednisone formulations and their effect on body composition and lean mass in male and female premenopausal overweight patients (aged 28 to 50 years) taking these drugs.
